Woman in workout gear with affirmation

Why Money Affirmations Don't Work, But This Does

July 20, 20266 min read

Have you ever stood in front of the mirror repeating "money flows to me easily" and felt like a complete imposter?

I have. And it turns out there's a very good reason it felt that way.

Affirmations are everywhere in the money mindset world. Short positive statements you repeat to yourself, out loud, internally, or stuck to your bathroom mirror, designed to improve how you think and feel about money. The promise is simple: say the new belief enough times and it becomes yours.

Except for most of us, it doesn't. And the research explains why.

What the science actually says

A study published in Psychological Science, with the telling title "Positive Self-Statements: Power for Some, Peril for Others," found that positive affirmations worked reasonably well for people who already had high self-esteem.

For people with lower self-esteem, the ones most likely to reach for affirmations in the first place, repeating positive statements didn't just fail to help. It made them feel worse.

Sit with that for a moment. The tool most commonly prescribed for a struggling money mindset has been shown to backfire for exactly the people it's prescribed to.

Why? Because when you say "I am great with money" while every cell in your body believes otherwise, your mind doesn't absorb the new statement. It argues with it. The gap between the words you're saying and the truth you're feeling becomes the loudest thing in the room, and every repetition reminds you of it.

You're not doing affirmations wrong. The tool is wrong for the job.

The part of you that isn't listening

Here's what the affirmation approach misses: your relationship with money doesn't live in your conscious mind, where words go. It lives deeper.

Some of your thoughts and beliefs about money are conscious. You can name them. But many are not. They were absorbed long before you had any say in the matter, and they run underneath your awareness: I'm bad with saving. I'm rubbish at managing money. I'm not worth being paid that much. The list is endless, and most of it was never chosen.

And these beliefs aren't just thoughts. They're felt. We process the world through images and meaning, and we attach emotion as we go. Harvard-trained neuroanatomist Dr Jill Bolte Taylor describes how the physiological wave of an emotion naturally moves through the body in about ninety seconds. But when an experience is overwhelming, or keeps repeating, or was never safe to feel at the time, that emotion doesn't complete its cycle. It stays. It becomes the meaning we carry into every similar moment afterwards.

So the tension your body holds when you open your banking app, the flush when someone asks what you earn, the flatness that arrives every time you try to plan, that's not a mindset problem sitting politely in your thoughts waiting for better words. That's your nervous system holding an old story.

And you cannot out-affirm your nervous system. When the body is holding fear, saying a positive phrase over the top of it is too much of a stretch. The mind and body disconnect, and the affirmation bounces off.

What works instead

Real change with money asks for what the affirmation approach skips, and it's the same pathway I take clients through in The Aligned Wealth Method: Awareness, Alignment and Leadership, with nervous system regulation underpinning every step.

Awareness. Before you reach for a new belief, get honest about the current one. What's the outcome you actually want with money? What do you currently think and believe about it? And here's the question almost nobody asks: where do you feel it in your body? The tight chest, the hollow stomach, the clenched jaw. Your body has been keeping the record all along, and it will tell you what your conscious mind has been talking over.

Regulation, underneath it all. This is the piece the mindset world skips entirely, and it's why so much mindset work doesn't hold. The emotions attached to your old money beliefs are stored physically, so they need to be worked with physically. With clients this looks like nervous system regulation and emotional processing, often through somatic practices like breathwork and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), which let the body complete what it's been holding. When your nervous system settles, the old belief loses its grip, and there's finally room for something new to land. This isn't a step you do once and move past. It underpins everything that follows.

Alignment. New beliefs aren't installed by repetition. They're built by evidence. This is where you connect your money to your values and your purpose, and put structures in place so every dollar has a job. Checking in with your money regularly. Creating a cashflow plan. Putting savings away for future you. Pausing before the impulse purchase. Each aligned action closes the gap between how it is and how you want it to be, and your nervous system believes proof over phrases every single time.

Leadership. This is where the new story becomes who you are. Making the decision instead of deferring it. Saying the number without your voice changing. Showing up for your money the way you already show up everywhere else you lead. Confidence with money isn't affirmed into existence. It's built, one led decision at a time.

Do the work in this order and something interesting happens: affirmations start working. Once the old emotion has released and your actions are generating real evidence, a positive statement stops being a stretch and becomes a description. The words finally have something true to stand on.

Where this goes next

If affirmations have never worked for you, there is nothing wrong with you. You've been handed a surface tool for deep work.

The deep work is knowing the story you're carrying, releasing what it left in your body, and leading yourself into new behaviour. If you haven't yet explored what your money story actually is, start with my post on rewriting your money story, or go straight to the source and download the free Exploring Your Money Story workbook HERE.

And if you're a woman who leads everywhere else in her life and you're ready to do this work properly, this is exactly what The Aligned Wealth Experience™ is built for: Awareness of the story, Alignment of the structures, and Leadership of your financial life. Your mind deserves better than borrowed phrases. It deserves the truth, felt and led.
